Meet the Board

Rose Hellat - President

I have been around the Northeast Area for a large part of my life and about five years ago I moved into the Sheridan Neighborhood. I think Minneapolis is ripe for change and we can facilitate that within our community. I believe in giving time and energy to areas and people that are worthwhile, as such I joined the SNO board. I look forward to meeting new neighbors and rising to the challenge.

Thank you!

Laura Murphy - Vice President

My husband and I moved to Minneapolis from Illinois in 1981. For most of the time since then, we've lived in Northeast Minneapolis. After downsizing and selling our Audubon Neighborhood home about six years ago, we moved to Sheridan and currently live in an apartment on Marshall. Having lived or worked in five different Northeast neighborhoods, I can conclusively say that Sheridan is hands-down my favorite! This neighborhood is strong, vibrant, involved, and connected, and I want to be a part of helping it to become even better. I've had many experiences over the years with community engagement, especially with youth and elders, and I look forward to sharing, learning, and growing even more as a board member.

Sam Palmer - Treasurer

I was born and raised in the south suburbs of the Twin Cities and moved to Minneapolis in 2014 to study at the University of Minnesota. Having lived in several neighborhoods around the city, I absolutely fell in love with Sheridan when I moved here a year ago and look forward to being a long-term resident here. There’s so many things to love about this neighborhood especially the bars, restaurants, parks, location, and most importantly, the people! I look forward to being a Board Member and engaging with the community however possible to continue to bring people together.

Brant Axt - Board Member At Large

I'm a Minnesota native who grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis and who has had the privilege of calling Northeast home for the last 6 years.  I lived in Marcy-Holmes for a year, followed by 4 years in St Anthony East, finally settling down in Sheridan in the summer of 2022. I'm passionate about all the trails, parks, and businesses in our neighborhood, but mostly I'm excited about all the people that I've met here! If you see me around on my bike, don't be afraid to say hi!

CJ Jensen - Board Member at Large

I've been a community organizer since my days at Nile C Kinnick HS. My life and work has taken me around the world but no place feels like home like the Sheridan neighborhood does. I'm passionate about walkable cities and micro economics. I enjoy gardening, quilting, and general good trouble.

Jeremy Mathison - Board Member at Large

I am a new business owner to the Sheridan neighborhood but have operated a business in NE Minneapolis since 2016. I believe that business exists to better its community and the only way for a business to truly grow is through the support of the local community. I actively seek input from our neighbors and use that feedback to collaborate together. I look forward to spending more time in the community and with our neighbors to collectively create solutions to the issues the impact our neighborhood.

Barbara Larson - Board Member at Large

I taught Special Education before I became Librarian of the Warroad Public Library from 1982 to 2015 and was an actress in the Warroad Summer Theater for 31 years. After retirement I moved to Minneapolis and began writing short stories and poems. I also do readings of my work.

Tim Kennedy - Board Member at Large

I have lived in northeast for 30+ years and have been involved in many things with my neighbors and family. I thought it was time to do something more for my neighborhood. I know the only way to be helpful is to get involved. I’m looking forward to helping out and contributing were I can.

Bob Day - Board Member at Large

My wife Terry and I have lived in the Sheridan Neighborhood since 2010. We truly love that the people and small businesses of this community interact and get to know each other like a small town. I want to use that connectedness to protect the environment that we hold special. I want to participate in the process with the city to protect and improve the supply of affordable housing options and make sure that any new development is consistent with the ideals of the neighborhood.

Maria George - Board Member at Large

I was born and raised in the Sheridan neighborhood until my parents moved to the suburbs. After bouncing around a handful of different spots around the twin cities, I can honestly say, that Sheridan is truly unique compared to other areas and a place I have been working to get back to. The bars, local eats, parks, and people are at the core of what makes this place so magical to preserve and grow. I am thrilled to be a part of the Sheridan neighborhood organization, and I can’t wait to see what we do together.

Meet the Staff

Nicole Pappas Stanoch - Office & Outreach Manager

I have lived in Sheridan since 2009. I love this community and all it has to offer. This is where I have established my life and where I have chosen to raise my family. I have a diverse background of work history ranging from cross-cultural communications to event execution to urban farming. I am really looking forward to putting all these skills to use to better serve our neighborhood and our greater community.

Samantha Howe - Board Member at Large

I moved to Sheridan from Wisconsin with my husband in 2021. I was in love with the neighborhood as soon as I pulled up to look at our rental. I’ve never felt more at home than I have here. There’s a sense of community that I haven’t experienced living anywhere else. Our dogs love walking down by the river, and we love all the local businesses that are so easily accessible. I’m looking forward to giving back to the community that took us in and made us feel at home.
